Basics

A stablecoin is a token designed to hold a steady value — almost always pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, so one coin is meant to always be worth about $1. On Solana they settle in seconds for a fraction of a cent, which makes them useful for payments, savings, and trading without the price swings of SOL or BTC.
Both target $1, but they’re run by different companies. USDC is issued by Circle, a US-regulated firm that publishes monthly attestations and holds reserves in cash and short-term US Treasuries. USDT (Tether) is the largest and most widely traded stablecoin globally, but historically less transparent about its reserves. On Solana, USDC has the deepest native liquidity; USDT is bridged and common on exchanges.

On Solana

Both are Solana token standards. SPL Token is the original, used by USDC and most older coins. Token-2022 is the newer standard that adds optional features issuers can switch on: transfer fees, freeze controls, confidential transfers, and KYC hooks. Neither is automatically “better” for you as a holder — it just tells you what the token can do. Each coin page shows which standard it uses.
